ESA MEMBER Steve F was taken out of school to attend each day of the Centenary Test with his mother. She conscientiously collected two of everything possible each day at the test.
This included two copies of stamps franked at a stall outside the MCG, each day, so each pair franked with a different date. Steve’s mother made him put away a pristine copy of each item. Years later on a significant birthday she presented Steve with a wonderful collection made with a rigor and discipline that he tries to maintain.
He had been a collector inspired by a love of cricket that probably had its roots in a great grandfather playing for Victoria. In Steve’s small town there weren’t enough kids to field teams – his interest in cricket took other paths, including collecting.
In the last couple of years Steve has got interested in beer coasters, and has an interesting collection.
I have taken a fancy to them because of the prospect of building a thematic collection supporting the events and commercial engagements they represent. They are truly designed as a useful, throwaway item which are primarily constructed from cheap, disposable material and probably not designed to last – almost, once could assume a poster child example of ephemera!
He’s looking to make contact with a beer coaster expert, can you or anyone you know help? Steve can be contacted on 0420 904 467.
